Tie Stall housing continues to be an important system of housing for small cowherds
of 100 cows or less. Industry statistics on the average cow herd size in North America would suggest many cows, except in a few geographical areas, are still milked in these smaller Tie Stall barns.

Tie Stall barns permit greater inter-action between cow and dairyman. This extra individual cow attention usually results in better cow observation for care & breeding and individual production based rations that assure optimum milk production. Although there is, perhaps, more time consuming chores in this type of housing the advent of automatic take-offs including carrier tracks, pipeline milking, automatic feeding and manure removal systems are making it easy for the operator.

These barns are ventilated with a system of controllable side and ridge openings, which permits adjustment manually, or automatically to insure an optimum production environment. Circulation fans are frequently employed to supplement natural wind forces in periods of high temperature.
